Interviewed in the framework of the How to web conference, Ioana Teleanu expressed her views on how Gen Z is much stricter and more disciplined when it comes to technology.
They set boundaries and genuinely seem to feel the need for those limits. This upcoming generation, perhaps precisely because they risk being immersed in technology from the very beginning of their lives, is choosing to set limits and is saying they don't want to over-optimize everything.
The tech industry now, a "10x engineer" doesn't feet the expectations
Right now, in the tech industry, the message is all about being a "10x engineer"- ten times better, ten times faster, maximising productivity, making everything simpler, faster, and easier. They, however, still want friction.
The generations coming after us seem to have understood that the secret to growth is friction - it is effort, mental work, and keeping the human brain active. They do use these technologies, but in a more responsible way than we do. We, on the other hand, have been under pressure because we're already in the workforce and want to remain relevant. We're pressured to use these technologies simply so we don't feel outdated, pushed aside, or replaced.
They are more assertive in their relationship with technology, at least in the United States, and they ask more social questions about its real impact: how it affects them, how it changes their behaviour, and so on. So there are some optimistic signs coming from the younger generations. In a way, I think they are facing an even greater challenge than we did. At least we had the chance to live a conventional life before all this and can manage without constant dependence on technology.
They have realised that what is happening could become completely overwhelming, and as a result, they are setting boundaries. So that's an optimistic note.
